McFadyens Contractors worked in partnership with Morrison Construction as the main subcontractor for all civil engineering works associated with the construction of the new Campbeltown Grammar School. The £26 million, three-storey school has capacity to cater for up to 500 pupils and will provide young people with a modern learning environment fit for the 21st century. Outside, it will also feature a 3G sports pitch, music pavilion and large car park on the site of the existing 1960s school buildings.
The new construction involved the installation of 236 pile foundations including pile caps and over 500 holding-down anchor bolts; over 950m3 of reinforced pad and strip foundations and over 730m3 of ground-bearing and upper floor slabs.
Over 2 kilometres of surface-water and foul-water drainage has been established including the associated filter trenches, channel drains, manholes among others. As part of the sustainable drainage system two Graf Cellular Stormwater Attenuation Tanks with capacities of around 380m3 and 650m3 respectively.
Trench excavations of around 2.8 linear kilometres were completed in order to allow the connection of external services such as water, gas and electricity supplies to name a few. McFadyens Contractors also installed service ducts and corresponding access chambers in accordance with National Standards.
Extensive hard landscaping have also contributed to the transformation of the area. By the end of the project, we will have laid over 1200m2 of block paving, 2200m2 of paving slabs, 2.1km of kerbs, and constructed over 70m of Gabion Retaining Walls.
There have been a number of key challenges in the delivery of the new CGS. With several sub-contractors on site, and the new school being situated in such close proximity to the former school building and adjacent residential areas, ensuring the Health and Safety of all required careful and efficient management – controlling the large volumes of deliveries, traffic movements and plant movements. Meeting targets and deadlines was critical in order to allow staff and pupils to move into the new building on time. McFadyens Contractors are delighted to have met all project demands, whilst maintaining excellent Health and Safety standards and high-quality workmanship.
