McFadyens Contractors as Principal Contractor to Argyll and Bute Council, carried out road strengthening and resurfacing works on the Kintyre Renewables Hub (KRH) U59 public road during the third quarter of 2014.
The project saw upgrade and construction of the 2.1km section of the U59 roadway between Kilchenzie Burn and the entrance to the Windtower factory. Filter drainage with draw pit chambers and open cut drains were installed on both sides of the roadway.
The road then was prepared for a 60mm bituminous overlay, with the road being re-profiled to provide adequate crossfall. Concrete edge strengthening was installed before the existing roadway was prepared with all existing potholes and surface indentations removed. For a large section of the works this involved laying a 40mm regulation course and the plaining of the existing surface. This allowed the Tensar geogrid to be laid to provide additional strength and support for the new roadway. The 60mm overlay of the works then took place along with the road markings.
A separate aspect of the works was the waterproofing of the existing bridge. The bridge was excavated one half at a time to allow the road to stay opened with appropriate traffic management provided. The bridge was waterproofed with a new kerb laid to provide pedestrian walkway and bituminously reinstated.
Traffic management was of upmost importance in this busy location on the outskirts of Campbeltown, with traffic lights and convoy systems being used. Communication with local transport companies was prioritised throughout the project, to maintain access for a heavy haulage transport company’s main depot based just off the roadway and also to Windtowers Scotland who frequently transport wind turbines.
The project was closely supervised by McFadyen’s project managers and staff, ensuring all surfacing & drainage works were carried out to a high standard, meeting the specifications set out by the client. The drainage aspect of the works doubled as the work progressed with McFadyens Contractors responding quickly and efficiently to the clients requests and ensuring completion dates were met as planned.
